Mathematics and Statistics Tuition

Our maths tutors are passionate about maths, and will instil confidence and a love of maths in your child. At Primary and Intermediate level our teachers will begin with an assessment to identify how your child learns, what they know and how they feel about maths.

From there they will create a learning plan that will maximise your child’s learning experience and enjoyment of maths utilising the ‘do’ using materials, ‘see’ pictorial representation and ‘imagine’ visualising the numbers and using written methods approach. This approach builds strong foundations in number sense, which refers to fluidity and flexibility with numbers. This helps children understand the meaning behind numbers and how numbers relate to each other.

Secondary School Level (Year 9 – 13) Maths

At secondary school level, students can become overwhelmed with the new concepts and problems introduced in certain areas, like algebra and calculus. Our mathematics specialist tutors can help by breaking down how to work through these problems, using techniques that help the student understand them at a deeper level.

Here are a few of the common stumbling blocks we can help with:

  • Simultaneous equations
  • Factorising quadratics
  • The rules for powers and roots
  • How to deal with numbers to the power of fractions, as well as how to interpret numbers to the power of negatives
  • Significant figures, standard form, reciprocals and percentages
  • How to formulate an algebraic expression for perimeters
  • How to expand out brackets to get quadratics
  • Quadratic equations as graphs and their key features
  • How to integrate measurement and algebra together as for the perimeter question and the area question
  • Quadratics (both solving and drawing them) and linear equations
  • Basic fundamentals of logarithms

Statistics Tuition:

  • Probability with two-way tables and probability trees, as well as discussing normal distributions with calculations
  • Null hypothesis
  • Positive and negative correlation
  • Trends
  • P-value (significant vs non-significance)

Calculus Tuition:

Year 12 students often find this topic difficult, specifically using the chain rule when differentiating, because the chain rule involves using substitution. Once the substitution has been made, it isn’t always easy to remember what the next step is. We can help students to remember what the chain rule is and how to apply it, making calculus far less intimidating and more fun.
